About St Thomas' Church, Lydiate
St Thomas’ Church, Lydiate is an active Church of England parish church on Church Lane in Lydiate, within the Liverpool diocese. It is part of a joint benefice with St Cuthbert’s Church in Halsall and holds Grade II listed status.
Probably designed by A. H. Holme, the church was erected in 1839–41 as a chapel serving the parish of St Cuthbert, before gaining its own parish in 1871. Austin and Paley added the chancel, south chapel and northern vestry in 1912. Built of stone and roofed with slate, it comprises a nave of four bays, a western tower and lancet windows. The tower features pointed entrances, a clock and pinnacles at each corner. Interior details include a gallery supported by octagonal iron columns, an alabaster reredos and a barrel-shaped roof over the chancel. Stained glass dating from 1913 is set into the chancel’s south window.
