About St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Liverpool
St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church stands on Seel Street in Liverpool, Merseyside. Formerly the city’s oldest Catholic place of worship, it is a Grade II listed building. After serving as a restaurant and bar, the premises were renovated and reopened in November 2024 as St Peter’s Tavern.
The church opened in September 1788, with its earliest baptisms recorded later that month. A permanent lease for the chapel site followed in 1789. The building was enlarged in 1817–18, when a porch and gallery were added, and expanded substantially in 1845 by incorporating part of the adjoining priests’ house to form the sanctuary and sacristy. A Lady Chapel was created in 1864, while a commemorative Lady Altar followed in 1898. Electric lighting was fitted during a redecoration in 1920. The church marked its 150th anniversary in 1938 with a Jubilee Mass attended by hundreds.
