About St Paul's Church, West Derby
St Paul’s Church, West Derby, stands on Town Row in the Liverpool suburb of West Derby, Merseyside. It remains an active Roman Catholic parish within Pastoral Area 5 of the Liverpool Archdiocese. The church has Grade II listed status in recognition of its architectural and historic interest.
Built between 1914 and 1915 to designs by Pugin & Pugin, the church is constructed from red sandstone and roofed with blue slate. Its free Perpendicular design includes an aisled nave, a chancel with adjoining chapels and a low southwest tower topped by a steep pyramidal roof. The west elevation has paired pointed doorways, a statue niche and several traceried windows. Inside, rounded columns support the arcades, while a gallery stands above the entrance area. Pugin & Pugin also designed fittings in marble and alabaster. Reordering carried out from 1973 to 1975 shortened the reredos, moved the mosaic-inlaid altar forwards and adapted the pulpit as a lectern.
