About St Michael's Church
St Michael’s Church is situated in St Michael’s Hamlet, Liverpool. It remains in use as a Church of England parish church and belongs to the Diocese of Liverpool. The parish shares a benefice with Christ Church in Toxteth Park and St Andrew’s in Liverpool. The building has Grade I listed protection.
Erected during 1813–15, the church was financed by John Cragg, who owned Liverpool’s Mersey Iron Foundry, and designed with architect Thomas Rickman. Ironwork forms an unusually large part of the fabric, including its supporting framework, internal pillars, windows, battlements and pinnacles. Brick, slate and stucco were also employed. Restoration in the late 1860s brought new seating, flooring and heating, while an enlargement during the 1890s moved the northern wall outwards and added a porch. Features include a western tower, marble font, early Gothic Revival stained glass and a porch window commemorating the First World War.
