About St Mary's Church, Wavertree

St Mary’s Church, Wavertree, is an active Church of England parish church in Liverpool, Merseyside. It belongs to the Diocese of Liverpool and serves within the deanery covering Toxteth and Wavertree. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.

The present building was erected for Methodists in 1872–73, with further work during the 1880s adding the tower and its broach spire. After First World War damage, it was renovated in 1925. The Methodist congregation closed the building in 1950, after which it was acquired by the Church of England and consecrated for Anglican worship in December 1952. It replaced an earlier Anglican church in Sandown Park, begun in 1850 and lost to bombing during the Second World War. Built from yellow sandstone with contrasting red sandstone details, the church has a slate roof, a five-bay aisleless nave, shallow transepts and an angled apse. Its tower includes lancet openings, rose windows, gargoyles and a pierced parapet. The earlier church’s foundation stone survives within a sealed eastern doorway.
