About St Mary's Church, Knowsley
St Mary’s Church, Knowsley is an active Church of England parish church on Knowsley Lane in Knowsley Village, in the Liverpool area of Merseyside. It belongs to the Diocese of Liverpool and has Grade II listed status.
Edmund Sharpe planned the building for the 13th Earl of Derby, with work carried out during 1843 and 1844. Sandstone walls, finer stone detailing and a roof covered with stone tiles frame a design largely influenced by Early English Gothic architecture. A spire rises above the western tower, while the interior comprises a nave with aisles, a chancel and later transepts. Edward Paley added the transepts in 1860, followed by a chapel commemorating the 14th Earl of Derby in 1871–72. Inside are royal arms from 1567, a seventeenth-century carved seat brought from Knowsley Hall, Matthew Noble’s alabaster memorial to the 14th Earl, stained-glass windows from several makers and a Liverpool-built organ dating to 1913.
