About St Mary's Church, Grassendale
St Mary’s Church, Grassendale stands on St Mary’s Road in Liverpool’s Grassendale area. It remains an active Church of England parish within the Diocese of Liverpool and has Grade II listed status.
Arthur Hill Holme designed the church, which was erected in 1852–53 for the new private estates at Grassendale Park and Cressington Park. Its foundation stone dates from September 1852, and the Bishop of Chester consecrated it in July 1854. Built of stone beneath a hexagonal slate roof, it follows the Decorated Gothic style. Features include broad transepts, a short apsidal chancel and a north-west tower crowned by a broach spire. The chancel contains stained glass by Evans from 1884, while Joseph Edward Nuttgens designed the 1953 west window. Norman and Beard made the two-manual pipe organ in 1903. Six original bells were adapted for chiming in 1938.
