About St John the Evangelist, Knotty Ash
St John the Evangelist, Knotty Ash stands beside Thomas Lane in Liverpool, Merseyside. The Church of England building is protected at Grade II for its historical and architectural significance.
Williams and Edwards designed the church, which Richard and Paul Barker, builders from Huyton, constructed during 1834–36. Red sandstone masonry forms the exterior. Its design features a slim tower at the western end, an inset spire and narrow, many-sided supporting piers. Three-light windows in the Perpendicular tradition line the high walls. In 1890, Aldridge and Deacon enlarged the building with an elevated chancel and a chapel on its southern side. A carefully sculpted Celtic cross from the closing years of the nineteenth century stands in the burial ground. The grounds also hold military graves from each world war and the burial place of Norman Harrison, who served as Second Engineer aboard the Titanic.
