About St James' Church, West Derby, Liverpool
St James’ Church stands on Mill Lane in West Derby, Liverpool. Formerly an Anglican parish church within the Diocese of Liverpool, it passed into the care of the Indian Orthodox Church in June 2019. The building is protected at Grade II.
Edward Welch designed the red sandstone church, which was constructed in 1845–46. W. and J. Hay enlarged the chancel in 1875–76, also adding an organ chamber, vestry and tower staircase. Its layout includes a five-bay nave, transepts, chancel and three-stage tower. The original slender spire was removed as unsafe in 1970 and replaced with a shallow pyramidal roof. Notable fittings include stained glass by artists associated with Shrigley and Hunt, east windows by William Wailes, a William Hill pipe organ and six bells cast by George Mears in 1859. A 1994 reordering removed the pews and created a hall behind a new internal wall.
