About St George's Church, Everton
St George's Church stands in Everton, Liverpool, and continues to serve as a Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Liverpool. Recognised at Grade I for its exceptional architectural and historic interest, it is the first of three Liverpool churches constructed by John Cragg using cast-iron elements produced at his own foundry.
James Atherton, a Liverpool merchant, gave the hilltop site, where Everton Beacon had stood until a storm destroyed it in 1803. Thomas Rickman designed the church, whose foundation stone was placed in April 1813; the Bishop of Chester consecrated it in October 1814. Its Perpendicular design combines a stone exterior with extensive ironwork, including the nave arcades, roof and window tracery. The west tower has buttresses, clocks on three sides, bell openings, corner pinnacles and a battlemented parapet. Most stained glass was lost during the Second World War, although a complete window from 1863 survives.
