About St. Bride's Church
St. Bride’s Church is an active Church of England parish church on Percy Street in Liverpool, Merseyside. The Grade II* listed building continues to provide services and is also used for concerts, charitable drop-in sessions and events connected with the Liverpool Biennial. It contains a professional recording studio.
Samuel Rowland designed the church for the Reverend James Haldane Stewart. Construction began on 29 August 1829, and its consecration followed on 29 December 1830. Regarded as Liverpool’s finest surviving Neoclassical church, it resembles a classical temple, with six plain Ionic pillars forming the imposing western portico. A Renaissance-style stained-glass window was added at the east end around 1905. Memorials in the chancel commemorate Stewart, who died in 1854, and W. M. Foster, his wife and their servant, who lost their lives when the steamship Rothsay Castle sank in 1831.
