About St Austin's Church, Grassendale
St Austin’s Church, Grassendale, stands on Aigburth Road in Liverpool, Merseyside. Formerly a Roman Catholic place of worship within the Archdiocese of Liverpool, it became redundant after closing in 2015. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building and remains owned by Ampleforth Abbey.
Built in 1838, the church was served by Benedictine monks associated with Ampleforth until 2012. Its interior was reorganised in 2000. The building combines brick walls, stone detailing and a slate-covered roof, while the western front is faced in stone and crowned by a gable. Architectural features include a projecting porch, slender pointed windows, a rose window with metal tracery, octagonal corner turrets and buttressed side elevations divided into five sections. Inside, iron pillars support a gallery at the west end. The chancel has a decorative screen and a prominent Crucifixion painting, with a chapel set in a separate recess beside it.
