About St Anthony of Padua Church, Liverpool
St Anthony of Padua Church, Liverpool is an active Roman Catholic parish in Mossley Hill, Merseyside. Situated on Queens Drive, facing Liverpool College, it remains under the care of Conventual Franciscan friars, who continue to minister to the parish.
Friars arriving from Syracuse, New York, established the community in 1926, when the site was acquired from Liverpool City Council. A provisional chapel opened that November, before construction of the permanent church began in 1931. Designed by Anthony Ellis, the building follows a basilican layout modelled on the Franciscans’ church in Syracuse. It opened and was consecrated in 1932, having cost £16,500. An organ transferred from Liverpool’s German Church was fitted in 1933. During the 1950s, a marble reredos and murals were introduced. Giuseppe Lerario later painted new sanctuary murals depicting the Immaculate Conception, figures from the Second Vatican Council, St Anthony and St Francis.
