Our Lady & Saint Nicholas stands on Chapel Street in Liverpool, close to Pier Head and the Mersey. This Church of England church is Liverpool’s Anglican parish church and continues to serve an active congregation. It falls within the Diocese of Liverpool, has Grade II designation and is a member of the Greater Churches Group.
Worship began at this location by the mid-13th century, initially in a modest stone building called St Mary del Quay. During the 14th century, work started on a larger chapel honouring both St Mary and St Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. In 1810, the unsafe spire fell through the nave while worshippers assembled, causing 25 deaths. Thomas Harrison, an architect based in Chester, subsequently created the present tower with its lantern, erected from 1811 to 1815. It housed twelve newly cast bells in place of the six destroyed during the collapse. Further internal adaptations took place in 1851 and 1852, while a parish centre followed in the 1920s.
