Liverpool Cathedral is the Church of England cathedral on St James Road in Liverpool, Merseyside. It serves as the bishop’s seat and the principal church of the Diocese of Liverpool. The cathedral has Grade I listed status and is Britain’s largest place of worship. By volume, it is also among the five largest cathedrals worldwide.
Construction began in 1904 and continued until 1978, following plans by Giles Gilbert Scott. Including the Lady Chapel, the exterior extends for 189 metres, while the interior measures 150 metres from end to end. Its 101-metre height makes it one of the tallest churches without a spire and Liverpool’s fourth-highest structure. The cathedral stands at St James’s Mount, a site selected after several more restricted or costly locations were considered. Hope Street connects it with the city’s Roman Catholic cathedral.
