About Great George Street Congregational Church
Great George Street Congregational Church stands where Nelson Street meets Great George Street in Liverpool, Merseyside. The church is no longer used for Congregational worship and now serves as The Black-E, a centre for community activity and contemporary arts. It has Grade II listed status.
An earlier chapel, completed in 1812, was lost to a fire in 1840. Its replacement was designed without charge by Liverpool city architect Joseph Franklin and opened in 1841, with room for almost 2,000 worshippers. Services ended in February 1967, and conversion work began after the Peter Moores Foundation acquired the property later that year. The stone building has two main levels above a basement. Its rounded entrance portico has fluted Corinthian columns supporting a circular tower capped by a low dome. A coffered dome and twin staircase with iron balusters survive inside, while decorative iron railings remain outside.
