About German Church
The German Church stands at the junction of Bedford Street South and Canning Street in Liverpool. It belongs to the network of German-speaking congregations across northern England and is affiliated with the British synod for Lutheran, Reformed and United German-language churches. German services take place twice monthly, while regular activities include faith discussions, the Wirral Circle and a playgroup for toddlers.
The congregation traces its beginnings to the 1840s, when an Anglican clergyman discovered Germans meeting for prayer aboard an unused vessel on the Mersey. A minister was subsequently ordained to serve them. The community began as a German-language Anglican congregation before becoming associated with the Lutheran Protestant tradition and the Protestant Church in Germany. Having worshipped and taught in several premises over the following decades, the congregation erected its own church building in 1960.
