About Church of St Paul, Liverpool
The Church of St Paul, Liverpool, is in Stoneycroft, Merseyside. Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott and protected as a Grade II* listed building, it served the Church of England until 2016. It was then acquired by the Midlands Coptic Orthodox Diocese and is now a Coptic place of worship dedicated to St Mary and St Cyril.
Construction ran from 1913 until 1916, financed by H. Douglas Horsfall. Brick surrounds its concrete frame, with stone details and a roof of tiles. The plan features an undivided nave and chancel, slender side aisles, several transepts and a prominent central tower crowned by a pyramidal roof. Three vaulted bays shape the restrained interior. Rushworth and Dreaper made the organ in 1916, fitting it within an eighteenth-century case bearing carvings by Grinling Gibbons. Two bells brought from an earlier St Paul’s were cast in 1775 and 1861. Restoration campaigns occurred in 1955, 1972 and from 1998 to 2013.
