About Church of St Luke, Liverpool
The Church of St Luke, Liverpool is a former Church of England parish church at Berry Street and Leece Street, near the upper end of Bold Street. Known locally as the bombed-out church, it has remained without a roof since wartime bombing in 1941. The Grade II* listed structure is preserved as a memorial to people killed during the conflict and has also hosted community arts and cultural events.
Construction began in 1811 and was completed in 1832. John Foster, Sr. prepared the original design, while his son later supervised the work and revised aspects of the scheme. Built from dressed sandstone in the Perpendicular Gothic style, the church retains a five-bay nave, an apsidal chancel of four bays and a three-stage western tower. Its roof, internal arcades, organ and clock were destroyed by fire following the bombing. Five of its eight bells fell, while the remaining three were severely damaged, and only small remnants of the stained glass survived.
