About Church of St James, Liverpool
The Church of St James, Liverpool is an active Church of England parish church in St James Place, Toxteth. Now known as St James in the City, it reopened for worship in 2010 after becoming redundant in 1974. The building is protected at Grade II*.
The church dates from 1774–75 and was probably designed by its builder, Cuthbert Bisbrown. William Culshaw replaced the timber roof in 1846, while H. Havelock Sutton designed the chancel added in 1900. Built of red brick with stone details, it has a five-bay nave and a four-stage western tower featuring clocks, paired bell openings and a battlemented top. Inside are Georgian-style galleries supported by notably early cast-iron columns, an open wooden roof with Norman-inspired arches, and an 1881 east window by Henry Holiday. Historic monuments include several connected with the slave trade. Structural repairs began in 2011, and a wider renovation was completed by 2021.
