About Church of St. Agnes and St. Pancras, Toxteth Park
The Church of St. Agnes and St. Pancras, Toxteth Park is an Anglican place of worship on Ullet Road, Liverpool. Still serving as a parish church, it belongs to the Liverpool diocese and maintains an Anglo-Catholic identity. Its architecture is recognised with Grade I listed status.
John Loughborough Pearson designed the church, which was erected from 1883 until 1885. H. Douglas Horsfall and his mother financed the £28,000 project as part of their family’s church-building tradition. The exterior combines brickwork with reddish sandstone details and roofing tiles, while pale Caen stone covers the internal surfaces. Its layout features a four-bay aisled nave, transepts, a Lady Chapel and an apse encircled by an ambulatory. Nathaniel Hitch produced the marble font and carvings around the high altar and apse. Further details include an Italian marble pulpit, glass by Kempe and Herbert Bryans, and surviving elements of the original Wordsworth and Maskell pipe organ.
