About Church of Saint John the Baptist
The Church of Saint John the Baptist is an active Church of England parish church in Tuebrook, Liverpool, at West Derby Road and Green Lane. It belongs to the Diocese of Liverpool and maintains the Anglo-Catholic tradition established at its foundation. The church is protected at Grade I for its exceptional architectural importance.
George Frederick Bodley designed the building, which was constructed from 1867 to 1870 in alternating bands of red and pale stone. Its features include a five-bay nave, aisles, chancel and a western tower crowned by a recessed spire. Henry Hare renewed the interior decoration in 1910 according to Bodley’s scheme, and Stephen Dykes Bower oversaw its restoration between 1968 and 1971. Elaborate stencilwork covers the walls and roofs, while C. E. Kempe contributed paintings and decorated panels. Stained glass includes work by Morris & Co. and Burne-Jones. Eight bells made in 1869 were later retuned and rehung, returning to use at Easter 2003.
