About Church of Saint Bridget, Liverpool
The Church of Saint Bridget stands in Bagot Street, Wavertree, Liverpool, Merseyside. It remains an active Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Liverpool and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Work began with the laying of its foundation stone in September 1868, and the building was consecrated in 1872. Initially serving Holy Trinity, Wavertree, as a chapel of ease, the church gained its own parish in 1901. E. A. Heffer designed both the building and its fittings in the form of an Italianate basilica. Common brick is enlivened by red and blue brick bands beneath a slate roof, while a tall, slender campanile rises at the north-west corner. Inside, nine-bay arcades rest on scagliola columns, and the richly decorated ceilings are coffered. Notable fittings include a mosaic of the Last Supper by Salviati, a multicoloured marble font and pulpit, clerestory glass by Charles A. Gibbs, and First World War memorial glass by H. Gustave Hiller.
