About Church of Saint Andrew, Liverpool
The Church of Saint Andrew stands on Rodney Street in Liverpool, Merseyside. Formerly serving a Presbyterian congregation within the Church of Scotland, it closed for worship in 1975. The building is protected at Grade II* and, following redevelopment, now forms part of student accommodation called St Andrew’s Place.
The foundation stone was set in June 1823, and the church opened in December 1824. Daniel Stewart designed its main structure, while John Foster was responsible for the Greek Revival frontage. The rendered brick body has arched windows, while the ashlar front incorporates an inset Ionic portico and corner towers capped by small domes. A serious fire in 1983 left the building badly damaged, and one unsafe tower was removed. The façade was restored and preserved by 2015, with the missing turret reconstructed during conversion. In the adjoining burial ground, a Grade II listed granite pyramid commemorates railway contractor William Mackenzie.
