About St Benedict's Church, Haltham-on-Bain
St Benedict’s Church, Haltham-on-Bain, is a former Anglican place of worship near Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire. Set between the Bain and the A153, it is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. The church became redundant in 1977 and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Dating from the early 12th century, the church was extended and altered between the later 12th and 15th centuries, then restored in 1880 and 1891. It is built from greenstone rubble, with dressed limestone details, areas of red-brick repair and slate roofs. Its plan includes a nave, north aisle, chancel and southern porch, with a boarded wooden bellcote above the nave. The Norman inner entrance has layered rounded mouldings and a carved tympanum. Other notable features include medieval windows, a 14th-century font and piscina, an 18th-century pulpit, varied box pews, and painted panels bearing the arms of Charles I and scriptural passages.
