About Church of St Hugh of Avalon
The Church of St Hugh of Avalon is in the Lincolnshire village of Sturton by Stow. Named for the saint also called Hugh of Lincoln, it is a Grade II listed building and no longer serves as a place of worship. Following its sale during 2022, it passed into private hands. Stow Minster provides the closest church today.
Dating from 1879, the church was established for local people as a mission linked to Stow Minster, a role it retained until closing. Its architect, John Loughborough Pearson, created a red-brick structure covered by tiled roofs and topped with a compact bell turret. Although furnishings used for religious services have been taken away, the internal arrangement otherwise survives with few changes.
