About St James' Church, Aslackby
St James’ Church, Aslackby is an active Church of England parish church in the Sleaford area of Lincolnshire. Dedicated to James, the son of Zebedee, it belongs to the Gilbertine Benefice within the Diocese of Lincoln. The church stands in Aslackby’s conservation area and has been protected as a Grade I listed building since 1968.
Construction of the present church began around 1300, beside property formerly associated with the Knights Templar preceptory at Aslackby. The building was enlarged during the middle of the fifteenth century. Restoration followed in 1856, when the chancel was reconstructed. Its tower is distinguished by uncommon detailing around its arches and incorporates traces of earlier masonry. Archaeological work in 2010 revealed foundations predating the tower and an early medieval floor formed from layers of straw. That year also saw the restoration of an eighteenth-century Hanoverian royal coat of arms, now displayed in the tower.
