About St Guthlac
St Guthlac is an active Church of England parish church in Market Deeping, Lincolnshire. The town’s only church, it belongs to the Diocese of Lincoln and the Elloe West deanery. It is also associated with Deepings Churches Together and the St Guthlac fellowship. The building is protected at Grade I.
Built in 1401 and predominantly dating from the fifteenth century, the church retains arches of Norman character beside the southern aisle, while the northern arcade is Gothic and later in date. Its tower has limestone sundials on both its southern and northern faces, each bearing a separate inscription. Victorian features include the pipe organ, which has two manuals. Chancel windows portray episodes from St Guthlac’s life, among them his journey across the landscape now known as the Fens to found the monastery that became Crowland Abbey.
