About St Helen
St Helen is an active Church of England parish church in Grimsby, Lincolnshire. Its heritage significance is recognised through its designation at Grade II*, reflecting a building shaped by many periods of alteration and repair. The parish now belongs to the Diocese of Lincoln and the Archdeaconry of Stow and Lindsey.
Christian worship has taken place on the site since the Saxon period. The building incorporates limestone, chalk and varied rubble masonry, with work from Saxon, Norman and later eras. Enlarged by the 15th century to include two aisles, it later lost its south aisle during the Elizabethan period, although traces remain. The three-level tower contains a lancet opening dating from the 1200s. Further restoration occurred across several medieval centuries, in 1732 and in 1903. Notable features include a 12th-century circular font, part of a Saxon grave marker, early Tudor bench ends and a royal coat of arms dated 1722. Medieval glass fragments survive alongside a war memorial east window installed in 1951.
