About St Augustine of Hippo

St Augustine of Hippo is a Church of England parish church situated on Legsby Avenue, Grimsby, in Lincolnshire. It belongs to a parish created during the early 1900s and is protected for its architectural and historic importance with Grade II status.

The church was dedicated during November 1911, followed by its consecration on 28 March the next year. The parish came into being in May 1912, incorporating land formerly belonging to two neighbouring parishes. Sir Charles Nicholson, 2nd Baronet, planned the building in a style shaped by Anglican Catholic practice, and later drew up the north aisle extension completed in 1935. Inside is an altar set given in remembrance of James Paul Moody, who served as sixth officer on Titanic. The organ was built by the respected Hull makers Forster and Andrews, then restored and enlarged with extra stops in 2010.
