About Grimsby Minster
Grimsby Minster is an active Church of England parish church in Grimsby, Lincolnshire. Dedicated to St James and serving within the Diocese of Lincoln, it received minster status in 2010. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Its origins are recorded by 1114, while the present church dates from about 1250 and developed around a six-bay nave. The central tower was completed in 1365. Restoration begun in 1856 extended the chancel, reconstructed the south transept, introduced stone-traceried windows and added oak roofs. Much of the stained glass installed around 1910 was destroyed during bombing in the Second World War and subsequently replaced. Surviving and later features include windows by Hugh Easton and Leonard Evetts, a medieval effigy of Sir Thomas Haslerton, and the twelfth-century carving known as the Grimsby Imp.
