About Saint Botolph's

Saint Botolph's serves as Boston’s active Church of England parish church, standing in Market Place in Lincolnshire. Known locally as the Boston Stump, it is protected at Grade I and remains a conspicuous feature of the flat Fenland skyline. Its tall tower was formerly a navigational marker for local fishing crews and is visible from Norfolk in clear conditions.

Work on the current building commenced in 1309, superseding an earlier Norman structure made from wood and masonry. Construction progressed westwards from the chancel, with the main body finished around 1390. Problems caused by riverside ground required alterations to strengthen the eastern section. The tower followed from about 1450 and was finished during the early sixteenth century in Perpendicular Gothic form. Approximately 81 metres high, it carries a richly ornamented octagonal lantern and pinnacles. A stair of 209 steps leads to an elevated walkway and the bell chamber. The interior measures about 74 metres from end to end and includes a vaulted sanctuary with the principal altar.
