About St Mary's Church, Barnetby
St Mary’s Church, Barnetby, stands in the Lincolnshire village of Barnetby. This former Anglican place of worship is no longer used for regular services and has Grade I listed status. After the congregation moved to nearby St Barnabas in 1927, the building became disused and was formally declared redundant in 1972. It is now maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust.
Built in 1001, the church retains Anglo-Saxon masonry in the nave’s southern wall. Its compact west tower largely belongs to the 11th and 12th centuries, while the chancel, northern arcade and tower arch are from the 13th century. Ironstone, chalk, limestone and brick appear throughout the fabric. Later changes included removing the north aisle, replacing the east window and adding a west gallery in 1829. Inside are an octagonal wooden pulpit with painted decoration and chancel rails adapted from a 15th-century oak screen. Three historic bells survive, including one cast in 1578, although they cannot now be rung.
