About St. Wilfrid's Church, Alford

St. Wilfrid's Church, Alford serves the Church of England parish in this Lincolnshire town. It bears the dedication of Wilfrid, an English saint who was also a bishop, and is designated Grade I for its historic and architectural importance.

A timber church previously occupied the site. The surviving structure was long assigned to around 1350, but investigation during the early twenty-first century dated stonework at one corner to 1289. The tower underwent reconstruction over the decade from 1525, and Gilbert Scott oversaw a major programme of repair in 1867. Inside, a fourteenth-century screen separates the main body of the building from the chancel. Other notable fittings include a Jacobean-era pulpit, surviving fragments of glass from the sixteenth century and a tomb dating to the following century. A set of six bells, cast by the Loughborough firm John Taylor & Co, was hung in 1934 for full-circle ringing.
