About Withcote Chapel
Withcote Chapel is situated at Withcote in Leicestershire. Once an Anglican parish church, it is no longer used for regular worship and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. It has Grade I listed protection and was selected by architectural historian Alec Clifton-Taylor among his outstanding English parish churches.
Dating to the early 1500s, the church was created for the private use of Withcote Hall before becoming the local parish church. Ironstone walls, pale limestone details and lead-covered roofs form a plain four-bay rectangle, with nave and chancel occupying one continuous space. Work undertaken in 1744 included repairs outside and alterations within, while also introducing the crenellated wall-top and ornate corner spires. Much of the furniture belongs to the same century. The glass, made around 1530–40 and linked to royal glazier Galyon Hone, represents apostles, biblical prophets, saints and Christ’s crucifixion. Heraldic glazing includes a shield belonging to Jane Seymour.
