About St Mary's Church, Ashby Folville

St Mary’s Church, Ashby Folville is a Church of England church near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire. Dating from the 13th century, it is recognised for its exceptional historic and architectural importance with Grade I listed status.

Maud Bassett established the church in 1220 and was buried within its chancel. A Norman font is the sole surviving feature from the earlier structure. Ironstone forms most of the building, while grey ashlar was used for the chancel, tower and decorative work beneath the battlements. Both aisles date from the 14th century, with the tower and nave roof added during the 15th. Eight bells hang in the belfry, including one cast in 1637; five were recast and two added in 1901. Several stained-glass windows are associated with the Smith-Carington family, including an 1876 west window depicting a Folville knight alongside Edward II.
