About Parish Church of St Peter
The Parish Church of St Peter stands in Belgrave, Leicester, and serves as a parish church. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building and is especially noted for its impressive Norman entrance.
The chancel and nave arcades were constructed during the 13th century, while a grave slab survives from the 12th century. Medieval chancel windows incorporate quatrefoil, circular and pointed forms. Other features include sedilia and an Elizabethan memorial to Ambrose Belgrave, who died in 1571. Damage to this monument may date from Civil War fighting in and around the church. Archaeological evidence suggests that an earlier Saxon place of worship could lie below the existing structure. The tower once carried a spire, removed in 1824, and the south porch followed in 1826. Restoration took place in 1857 and 1860, with further work by Ewan Christian, W. Gillet and George Gilbert Scott during the later 19th century.
