About Church of St Mark
The Church of St Mark in Leicester, Leicestershire, is a former Church of England parish church with Grade II* listed status. Declared redundant in 1986, it stood unused until 2005, when it was adapted as the Empire Banqueting Hall for conferences and weddings.
Funded by William Perry-Herrick, the church was designed by Ewan Christian. Its foundation stone was placed by the Bishop of Peterborough in 1870, and the completed building was consecrated on 25 April 1872. Ward and Hughes produced the original chancel glass, while later chapel windows were created by Henry Holiday in 1893 and Charles Eamer Kempe in 1895. Ernest Charles Shearman finished the western end in 1903. Other notable features included an 1871 pipe organ by William Hill & Sons, bells made by Taylor of Loughborough, a clock from Moore of Clerkenwell, and a 1910 apse painting by James Eadie Reid.
