About St Mary Magdalene's Church, Stapleford
St Mary Magdalene’s Church, Stapleford, is a former Anglican place of worship at Freeby, Leicestershire, within Stapleford Park. Once serving both the local parish and the Sherard estate, it is now redundant and maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. The building is listed at Grade I.
Completed in 1783 to George Richardson’s design, the church was commissioned by Robert Sherard, 4th Earl of Harborough, and succeeded an older church there. Its Gothic Revival structure is faced with finely cut limestone and comprises a nave of three bays, a chancel, two transepts and a western porch tower. Battlements and pinnacles crown the tower, while carved shields recalling families connected by marriage to the Sherards decorate the outer walls. Repairs were undertaken in 1931 and 1967. Inside are a wooden west gallery, an inlaid marble reredos and several Sherard memorials brought from the former building, including a 1490 brass for Geoffrey Sherard and his wife.
