About St John the Baptist
St John the Baptist is a Church of England church in Belton, Leicestershire. Recognised for its architectural and historic significance, it is protected with Grade II* status.
The church is designed in the Early English style, with a nave and clerestory, chancel, south porch, aisles, and a tower crowned by a spire. The tower contains three bells. Four arches form each nave arcade, resting on eight-sided piers with decorated capitals. Piscinae survive in the chancel and at the eastern ends of the aisles. The north aisle contains the restored upper stone from the tomb of Roesia de Verdun, who died in 1247 and established nearby Grace Dieu Priory. A window in the south aisle commemorates Charles Thompson. Restoration campaigns took place in 1850 and 1877, while the chancel screen was restored in 1894 as a memorial to Louisa Blakeney.
