About Saint Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael the Archangel stands in Whittington, Lancashire, and continues to serve as a Church of England parish church. It belongs to the Diocese of Blackburn and shares a benefice with churches in Gressingham, Hornby and Arkholme. The church has Grade II* listed status, while its site is protected as a Scheduled Monument.

Christian worship may have taken place here from around 1200, within the enclosure of an earlier castle. The west tower, dating from the early 1500s, is the oldest surviving section. Paley and Austin of Lancaster reconstructed most of the remaining building in 1875, using rough sandstone beneath slate roofing. Notable details include an open wooden roof, a richly worked chancel screen, a carved stone reredos and a decorated marble font. Stained glass ranges from windows made around the 1875 rebuilding to a 1968 image of Saint Blaise. The church also contains a two-manual Abbott and Smith organ and six bells, the earliest cast in 1739.
