About Christ Church
Christ Church stands on Carr Road in central Nelson, Lancashire. It remains an active place of worship, hosting Roman Catholic Masses and Methodist services through an uncommon partnership between the two denominations. The present shared arrangement dates from 2004, and representatives of both traditions renewed their formal commitment to it at a ceremony in 2019.
The Catholic community continues Nelson’s earliest mission, which was dedicated to Saint Joseph and occupied three different churches over time. Catholics and Methodists first shared an earlier building in 2001, before work on the present church started the following year. Bishop Terence Brain opened it on 6 June 2004. Its structure combines a steel framework with concrete blockwork, while the exterior is clad in locally sourced stone beneath a slate-covered roof. Stained glass and banners featuring a branching design are among its notable decorative elements.
