About St Helen's Church, Churchtown
St Helen’s Church, Churchtown is an active Church of England parish church in Kirkland, Lancashire, beside the River Wyre. Formerly serving the wider parish of Garstang, it now belongs to the parish of Garstang St Helen (Churchtown) within the Diocese of Blackburn. The church is protected at Grade I, the highest level of listed status.
Its origins date to about 1220, with surviving 13th-century stonework in the nave and chancel. Much of the building was reconstructed during the 15th and 16th centuries, using rubble masonry with dressed-stone details in the Perpendicular style. Flood damage in 1736 led to repairs, while work in 1811 included new roofs, heightened walls and the addition of a clerestory. E. G. Paley directed another restoration between 1866 and 1869. Notable features include a six-stage western tower, a Tudor Lady chapel, 19th-century stained glass, an effigy commemorating Alexander Butler and six bells cast in 1828.
