St John The Evangelist is situated on Chapel Lane in Ellel, Lancashire. The church continues to function as an Anglican parish church in the Diocese of Blackburn, within the Lancaster archdeaconry and the Lancaster and Morecambe deanery. It is protected as a Grade II listed building.
The present church was constructed during 1906 and 1907, replacing an 1800 building elsewhere. Designed by the Lancaster firm Austin and Paley, it cost approximately £5,000 and originally accommodated 380 worshippers. The structure combines rough sandstone masonry with red roof tiles, and includes a nave, northern aisle, chancel, porch and central tower. Although a spire was planned, it was not completed. Interior features include an arcade of six bays supported by alternating circular and octagonal columns, stained glass created by Shrigley and Hunt in the early twentieth century, and an Ainscough organ with two manuals. A piscina survives in the chancel, while the burial ground includes the war grave of a First World War artilleryman.
