About St Bartholomew's Church, Colne

St Bartholomew's Church, Colne, is a Church of England parish church in the Lancashire town of Colne. It remains in active use within the Diocese of Blackburn and is protected at Grade I, recognising its exceptional architectural and historic significance.

Christian worship has taken place on the site since at least the 1100s, with a possible foundation by Robert de Lacy. Most of the present stone building belongs to the early 1500s, though parts of the nave’s northern arcade may survive from around 1200. Designed in Perpendicular Gothic forms, the church includes a nave, chancel, chapels, several aisles and a 62-foot western tower with a battlemented parapet and gargoyles. Victorian restoration included extensive alterations by E. G. Paley and, later, Paley, Austin and Paley. Notable fittings include an octagonal font given in 1590 and eight bells, six cast in 1814 and two added in 1900.
