About St Michael and St John Church, Clitheroe

St Michael and St John Church is an active Roman Catholic church on Lowergate in Clitheroe, Lancashire, a short distance from the town centre. It is served by the Diocese of Salford and belongs to Our Lady of the Valley parish, which also includes St Mary Queen of Peace at Sabden. The building is protected at Grade II.

The Catholic mission in Clitheroe began under the Jesuit priest John Laurenson in 1794. Thomas Weld supplied a Lowergate plot four years later, enabling a modest chapel and school to open in 1799. Growth in the local Catholic community led to the construction of the present, larger church alongside the earlier premises in 1850. Joseph Hansom designed the new building, while its predecessor was subsequently used for education. Church and school accommodation were enlarged in 1870, and another school building followed in 1897. Jesuit responsibility ended in 2008, when the Diocese of Salford assumed care of the parish.
