About St Peter's Church, Burnley

St Peter’s Church, Burnley is a Church of England place of worship beside the River Brun in Burnley, Lancashire. It remains an active parish church within Blackburn Diocese, serving in the Blackburn archdeaconry and Burnley deanery. Granted Grade II* protection in 1951, it is recognised as a building of notable historic and architectural significance.

Christian worship took place on this site before 1122, and the earlier structure was substantially reconstructed in the 1530s. The oldest surviving fabric is found at the base of the western tower and dates to the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Sandstone walls, slate roofs and late Perpendicular styling characterise the building. Its southern and northern aisles were renewed in 1789 and 1802 respectively, followed by an additional tower stage in 1803. During work led by Miles Thompson in 1854, new nave arches and an upper windowed level were introduced. The chancel was later expanded in 1872–73. Several nineteenth-century memorials stand in the churchyard, including three monuments protected at Grade II.
