About St Matthew's Church, Burnley

St Matthew's Church, Burnley stands on St Matthew's Street in Burnley, Lancashire. It remains a functioning Church of England parish within the Diocese of Blackburn, with worship taking place on Sundays and during the week. Its benefice is shared with Holy Trinity, Burnley, following the closer integration of the two churches in the 1970s.

The first church was constructed from 1876 to 1879 to plans by William Waddington and Sons. A fire caused by its electrical system destroyed most of the building on Christmas Day 1927. Henry Paley oversaw its reconstruction from 1929, with the present church opening in 1931. Designed in a thirteenth-century Gothic manner, it has a turret on its south-west corner. Notable features include stained glass by Harry Stammers and Henry Harvey, and a three-manual organ made in 1920 by Alexander Young, transferred from Farnworth and rebuilt here in 1933.
