About St Michael's Church, Bracewell
St Michael's Church stands in Bracewell, within the civil parish of Bracewell and Brogden in Lancashire. It continues to serve as a Church of England parish church and belongs to the Diocese of Leeds. Its parish is joined with Holy Trinity and St Mary le Ghyll in Barnoldswick. The building holds Grade I listed status.
Founded in 1143 as a chapel for the Tempest family, the church became parochial ten years later. Although some 12th-century work survives, much of the present structure was built during the 15th or early 16th century. It is made of stone and roofed with stone slates, with a western tower, nave, chancel, northern aisle and southern porch. Norman features include the rounded southern entrance, chancel arch and font. Medieval stained glass remains in several windows, while the pulpit and communion rails are Jacobean. The tower’s ground floor now serves as a memorial chapel.
