About Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic parish church on Talbot Road, near central Blackpool in Lancashire. Established as Blackpool’s earliest Catholic place of worship, it remains in use under the care of clergy from the Diocese of Lancaster. The building is protected at Grade II*, recognising its particular architectural and historic significance.

Founded by the Jesuits, the church was completed in 1857 from plans by E. W. Pugin. Built in stone and roofed with slate, it follows an English Gothic design, with a four-bay nave, transepts and aisles arranged around an eight-sided crossing. An eastern enlargement was added in 1894 by Pugin & Pugin. Distinctive elements include the four-stage western tower, a timber lantern above the crossing, stained-glass nave windows by Frances Barnett, and a carved white-marble pulpit supported on red and black columns. Two Lady Chapels stand beside the chancel.
